Scholarship for Volunteerism

Do you do a lot of volunteer work and looking for a scholarship? Well Fernando Award Foundation Inc. is giving away one $2,000 scholarship and ten $1,000 scholarships to graduating seniors and community college students which may be used for university, community college or trade schools. Dr. Karin Duran- Memorial Youth Scholarship 2014

First Place- $1,200 Second Place- $800 and Third Place- $500
Applicant Must
1. Be a Latina.
2. Be a graduating senior from a high school in the San Fernando Valley.
3. Have applied to a two-year or four-year college/university for the Fall 2014.
4. Maintain a 2.5 GPA or higher.
Instructions for Application
1. Scholarship applications must be postmarked no later than, April 4, 2014.
2. Only completed scholarship applications will be considered
3. Attach official copy of your high school transcript.
4. At least one letter of recommendation from a teacher or counselor.
5. A three-page (Four-page Maximum) essay answering the following question:
             "You are a college graduate and a top professional in your career.  You have been invited to speak to a group of Latina high school students.  What advice would you give them about overcoming obstacles, preparing for college and choosing a career path?"

ELIGIBILITY:
(a) Be accepted into a four year university for the 2014-2015 academic year;
(b) Have a cumulative GPA of 2.5, and
(c) Be an African-American senior female high school student.
(d) If selected, winner must attend award ceremony
The Scholarship committee will select the winners based on scholastic record, leadership activities, and the essay/creative piece.
AWARD:
Nu Omicron Zeta will award one scholarship to be paid over four continuous years.  Upon proof of enrollment, $300 will be award the first year.  As long as the recipient maintains a 2.5 GPA and submits a transcript and proof of continued enrollment for each academic school year, the recipient will be awarded an additional $250 a year for up to three additional years (For a total of $1050)

UC'S AWPE (Analytical Writing Placement Examination) slated for May!


UC will administer the Analytical Writing Placement Examination (AWPE) on May 10 to students who have been admitted to the university for fall 2014 and who, by April 1, have not satisfied the Entry Level Writing Requirement by other means. Students are not required to take the AWPE if they have a record on file with UC indicating achievement of acceptable scores on the SAT Reasoning Test- Writing section, the ACT combined English/Writing test, the Advanced Placement English Language or Literature examination, or the International Baccalaureate Higher Level or Standard Level English A examination. Students also are exempt from the examination if they have successfully completed a transferable college-level English composition course.

Comprehensive information about the Entry Level Writing Requirement and the Analytical Writing Placement Examination is available online at www.ucop.edu/elwr. The site explains the examination process and include previous examinations that can be downloaded and used by students to strengthen their skills in reading comprehension and writing proficiency.
