Profiles In Courage Essay Contest

Do you like to read? Are you an exceptional writer? Does Politics interest you? This is the scholarship for you! Anyone in grades 9-12 is welcome to participate. 


To participate you must write an original and creative essay of 1,000 words or less (but no less than 700) that demonstrates an understanding of political courage as described by John F. Kennedy in Profiles in Courage. Students should use at least five varied sources such as government documents, letters, newspaper articles, books, and/or personal interviews to address the following topic: 

Describe and analyze an act of political courage by a United States elected official that took place during or after 1956. Include an analysis of the obstacles, risks, and consequences associated with the act. The essay may concern an issue at the local, state, national, or international level. 


Awards: 


  • First Place Prize: $10,000. 
  • Second Place Prize: $1,000. 
  • up to 5 more finalists receive $500.
